🎖️ Army Body Composition Calculator (WHtR)
Check the Army waist-to-height ratio standard: enter height and waist to see your WHtR, whether it is under 0.55, and the maximum waist for your height.
Measure your waist around the abdomen at the level of the navel, relaxed, with the tape level and snug but not compressing the skin. Use the same unit for height and waist.
Maximum waist for your height: under 38.5 in — 2.5 in to spare.
Standards and measurement procedures are set by Army directives and can change. Use this as a self-check, and confirm the current requirement with your unit before an official assessment.

What Army Body Composition Calculator (WHtR) Does
This calculator checks the Army’s waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) body composition standard. Enter your height and your waist measured at the navel, and it shows your ratio, whether it is under the 0.55 passing threshold reported for the 2026 policy, and the largest waist you can have at your height — with how much margin you have or how far over you are.
The Army announced that its body composition program would adopt the waist-to-height ratio, replacing body fat estimates from tape measurements. WHtR is simple: one measurement divided by height, in the same unit, with no formulas that differ by sex or age. A table of maximum waist sizes for every height from 5′0″ to 6′8″ is included for quick reference.
Army standards and the exact measurement procedure are set by directives and can be updated. Use this as a self-check before an official assessment, and confirm the current requirement with your unit.
How to Use Army Body Composition Calculator (WHtR)
- Choose inches or centimeters
- Enter your height and waist measured at the navel
- Read your waist-to-height ratio and whether it is under 0.55
- See the maximum waist for your height and how much margin you have
- Confirm the current standard with your unit before an official assessment
Formula Used by Army Body Composition Calculator (WHtR)
Waist-to-height ratio
WHtR = waist circumference ÷ height (same unit) · maximum waist = 0.55 × height
Worked example
A soldier 5′10″ (70 in) with a 36-inch waist.
- 36 ÷ 70 = 0.514
- 0.55 × 70 = 38.5 in
Result: WHtR 0.514 — under 0.55, with 2.5 inches to spare.
Maximum Waist for WHtR Under 0.55 (Selected Heights)
| Height | Waist under | Height | Waist under |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5′2″ (62 in) | 34.1 in | 5′10″ (70 in) | 38.5 in |
| 5′4″ (64 in) | 35.2 in | 6′0″ (72 in) | 39.6 in |
| 5′6″ (66 in) | 36.3 in | 6′2″ (74 in) | 40.7 in |
| 5′8″ (68 in) | 37.4 in | 6′4″ (76 in) | 41.8 in |
How to Read Your Result
Measuring consistently
Small differences in tape placement change the result. Measure on bare skin at the navel, standing relaxed with feet together, after a normal breath out, with the tape level all the way around and snug without pressing in. Take two or three readings and use the average when checking yourself.
Why waist-to-height
Waist size reflects abdominal fat, which is closely tied to cardiovascular and metabolic risk, and dividing by height makes it fair across body sizes. Unlike weight-based charts, a muscular soldier is not penalized for mass carried outside the midsection.
Limitations & Accuracy Notes
- The 0.55 threshold is the figure reported for the 2026 Army policy; confirm it and any retest rules with your unit.
- This page does not reproduce the official measurement protocol; follow your unit’s procedure for record measurements.
- WHtR is a screening measure, not a medical diagnosis.
