A typing speed test that shows gross and net WPM side by side, so you can see exactly how much errors cost — not just a single number.
What Typing Speed Test Does
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, but the "word" in WPM is not a real word — it is a fixed unit of 5 characters, spaces included. Typing tests standardized on this decades ago because real word lengths vary wildly ("a" versus "extraordinary"), which would make two people's scores on different passages incomparable. Divide total characters typed by 5, divide by minutes elapsed, and that is WPM — a measure of keystrokes, not vocabulary.
The number worth trusting is net WPM, not gross. Gross WPM counts every character you typed, including the ones that were wrong. Net WPM subtracts your errors, because a fast typist who retypes half of what they wrote has not actually produced text any faster than a slower, more careful one. This tool shows both, so the gap between them is visible rather than hidden behind a single flattering number.
Pasting is disabled here on purpose. A typing test measures the process of typing, and a pasted answer would make every result meaningless in the same way a taxi ride would in a footrace.
The timer starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads, so reading the passage first costs nothing.

Formula Used by Typing Speed Test
Gross and net words per minute
Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes Net WPM = Gross WPM − (errors ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Worked example
275 characters typed in exactly 60 seconds, with 8 of them wrong.
- Gross: (275 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 minute = 55 WPM
- Net: 55 − (8 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 55 − 1.6
Result: Gross 55 WPM, net 53.4 WPM — the 1.6 WPM gap is the cost of those 8 mistakes.
Accuracy
Accuracy = (characters typed − errors) ÷ characters typed × 100
Worked example
The same 275 characters, 8 wrong.
- (275 − 8) ÷ 275 = 267 ÷ 275
- = 0.9709
Result: 97.1% — high accuracy despite a real, nonzero error count, which is normal even for fast typists.
Typing speed from a real, peer-reviewed study
Pinet et al. (2022) measured 1,301 university students using the identical 5-character-word convention this tool uses, then split them into performance groups.

How to Read Your Result
Net WPM is the number that matters
Two typists can post the same gross WPM while one made no mistakes and the other retyped a third of the passage. Net WPM separates them, because it charges the time cost of every correction back against the score. Comparing your own net WPM over time is a more honest measure of progress than watching the gross figure alone.
"Good" depends on which population you compare against
The study above found a roughly 26 WPM gap between its least and most proficient groups, and a separate large-scale study put the general mean near 52 WPM. There is no single universal target — a professional transcriptionist and someone who types occasional emails are not the same population, and comparing yourself to the wrong one is a common way to feel worse or better than the numbers actually justify.
Accuracy below about 95% usually means slow down
High error rates compound: every mistake costs time twice, once to type it wrong and again to notice and fix it, which is exactly what net WPM is designed to capture. Deliberately slowing down until accuracy is consistently high, then building speed back up, is the standard progression recommended by typing instruction generally, rather than pushing raw speed while accuracy suffers.
Limitations & Accuracy Notes
- Five short passages are used, rotated randomly. Repeated testing on the same small set will inflate scores through memorization rather than genuine speed gains — this tool is a spot check, not a rigorous benchmark.
- The 5-character-word convention is the field standard, but it means WPM here is not literally "dictionary words per minute"; a passage with unusually long or short words will shift the figure slightly relative to that intuition.
- Backspace and correction behavior are not scored separately from a straight character comparison — this tool checks the final submitted text position-by-position against the target, not the sequence of keystrokes that produced it.
- Mobile on-screen keyboards, autocorrect and predictive text all change typing dynamics substantially; the figures above are for physical keyboards and normal typing conditions.
- This does not diagnose typing-related repetitive strain injury risk or ergonomic issues — it measures speed and accuracy only.
