About this tool

Unit price is the cost per single unit of measure (per ounce, pound, liter, count, etc). Comparing unit prices helps you find the best value, especially when products come in different sizes.

Grocery stores often show unit prices on shelf tags, but calculating yourself ensures accuracy and allows comparison across stores. Bigger packages usually (but not always) have lower unit prices.

Usage examples

Cereal Box Comparison

Find better deal

$4.99 for 12oz = $0.416/oz vs $7.99 for 18oz = $0.444/oz → Smaller box is cheaper per ounce!

Bulk vs Single

Is bulk worth it?

Single: $2.00 for 1 item = $2.00/item. 6-pack: $10.50 for 6 items = $1.75/item. Save $0.25 per item (12.5%)

Different Units

Cross-unit comparison

Convert to same unit: $3.99/lb = $0.249/oz, compare to $4.50/16oz = $0.281/oz

FAQs

How do you calculate unit price?

Divide total price by quantity: Unit Price = Total Price ÷ Quantity. Example: $5.00 for 20oz → $5.00 ÷ 20 = $0.25 per ounce. Always compare items using the same unit (convert pounds to ounces if needed). Lower unit price = better value.

Is buying bulk always cheaper per unit?

Usually yes, but not always. Check expiration dates - savings are lost if product spoils. Consider storage space and upfront cost. Sometimes smaller packages are on sale with lower unit price. Always calculate - don't assume bulk is better. Our calculator shows which is actually cheaper.

How do I compare items with different units?

Convert to common unit first. Example: 1 pound = 16 ounces, 1 liter = 1000 mL. If comparing $4/lb to $0.30/oz, convert: $4 ÷ 16 = $0.25/oz. Now compare $0.25/oz (better) vs $0.30/oz. Use online converters or package labels (often show both units).

What is a good way to save using unit prices?

Compare brands - store brands often have 20-40% lower unit prices. Compare sizes - "value size" isn't always best value. Check sales - sometimes smaller sizes on sale beat regular bulk prices. Buy bulk for non-perishables you use often. Calculate per-serving for foods with different densities.

Do stores have to display unit prices?

Many states require grocery stores to display unit prices on shelf tags. However, accuracy varies and stores may use different base units (one shows per ounce, another per pound). Calculating yourself ensures consistent comparisons. Also helpful when shopping online or at stores without unit price labels.
