About this tool
Fuel costs are often the largest variable expense for road trips and daily commuting. Our Fuel Cost Calculator helps you accurately estimate how much you'll spend on gas based on your trip distance, vehicle's fuel efficiency (MPG or L/100km), and current fuel prices. This is essential for budgeting road trips, comparing vehicle operating costs, deciding between driving and flying, or tracking business mileage expenses. The calculator works with both U.S. units (miles, MPG, gallons) and metric units (kilometers, L/100km, liters) for international users.
Understanding fuel economy is key to managing transportation costs. MPG (Miles Per Gallon) indicates how far your vehicle travels on one gallon of gas - higher is better. A car getting 30 MPG uses half as much fuel as one getting 15 MPG for the same distance. For a 300-mile trip: 30 MPG uses 10 gallons while 15 MPG uses 20 gallons. At $3.50/gallon, that's $35 vs $70 - doubling your fuel cost. European/metric systems use L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) where lower is better. Our calculator handles both systems and performs conversions automatically.
Many factors affect real-world fuel economy beyond the EPA estimates: highway vs city driving (highway is typically 20-30% more efficient), driving speed (55 mph is optimal; 75+ mph decreases efficiency 15-25%), weather conditions (A/C use reduces efficiency 10-20%), vehicle load and cargo, tire pressure (underinflated tires reduce MPG 3-5%), aggressive acceleration and braking, and vehicle maintenance (dirty air filters, old spark plugs reduce efficiency). The EPA estimates on your window sticker are tested in ideal conditions. Real-world MPG is often 10-20% lower, so budget conservatively.
The calculator is also valuable for comparing vehicles before purchase. If deciding between a $30,000 sedan (35 MPG) and a $28,000 SUV (22 MPG), calculate long-term fuel costs. Driving 15,000 miles/year at $3.50/gallon: sedan costs $1,500/year in gas, SUV costs $2,386/year. Over 5 years, the SUV costs $4,430 more in fuel, negating its lower purchase price. For business use, IRS allows standard mileage deduction (65.5¢/mile in 2023) covering fuel, depreciation, and maintenance. Our calculator helps determine if actual costs exceed this rate. All calculations are performed privately in your browser with no data stored.
Usage examples
Weekend Road Trip
450-mile round trip, car gets 28 MPG, gas is $3.45/gallon
Fuel needed: 450 ÷ 28 = 16.07 gallons. Total cost: 16.07 × $3.45 = $55.45. Cost per mile: $55.45 ÷ 450 = $0.123/mile. For a family of 4, that's $13.86 per person. Compare to flying: 4 tickets at $150 = $600. Driving saves $544.55 but takes more time. Budget additional $20-30 for snacks/tolls during drive.
Daily Commute Annual Cost
30-mile round-trip commute, 250 work days/year, 24 MPG city, $3.80/gallon
Annual distance: 30 × 250 = 7,500 miles. Fuel needed: 7,500 ÷ 24 = 312.5 gallons. Annual fuel cost: 312.5 × $3.80 = $1,187.50. Monthly: $98.96. This doesn't include maintenance, insurance, depreciation. IRS standard rate (65.5¢/mile) would reimburse $4,912.50, covering all vehicle costs. Compare to public transit pass at $100/month ($1,200/year) for similar cost without wear on your vehicle.
Fuel-Efficient vs SUV Comparison
2,000-mile vacation: Sedan (38 MPG) vs SUV (21 MPG), gas $3.60/gallon
Sedan: 2,000 ÷ 38 = 52.63 gallons × $3.60 = $189.47. SUV: 2,000 ÷ 21 = 95.24 gallons × $3.60 = $342.86. Difference: $153.39 savings with sedan. However, if you need SUV space for camping gear and 6 people, the $25.57 per person extra might be worth the convenience. Alternatively, rent fuel-efficient vehicle for $50/day × 10 days = $500 (still expensive but new, reliable vehicle).
Truck Fuel Cost for Moving
Rental truck gets 10 MPG, 850-mile one-way move, diesel $4.20/gallon
Fuel needed: 850 ÷ 10 = 85 gallons. Total cost: 85 × $4.20 = $357. Add truck rental ($150-200/day × 3 days = $450-600). Total moving cost: $807-957 for DIY move. Professional movers quote $2,500. DIY saves $1,543-1,693 but requires physical labor and time. Factor in helpers' pizza/beer budget ($100) and potential injury risk.
Electric vs Gas Cost Comparison
Gas car: 28 MPG, $3.50/gallon. Electric: 3.5 mi/kWh, $0.13/kWh electricity. 12,000 mi/year
Gas car: 12,000 ÷ 28 = 428.57 gallons × $3.50 = $1,500/year. Electric car: 12,000 ÷ 3.5 = 3,428.57 kWh × $0.13 = $445.71/year. Savings: $1,054.29 annually. Over 6 years (typical ownership): $6,325.68 savings. This helps offset higher EV purchase price. Add savings on oil changes ($300/year) and brake maintenance ($200/year): total savings $9,325.68 over 6 years. Break-even if EV costs $9,000 more.

FAQs
How do I find my vehicle's MPG?
Three methods: (1) Check the EPA sticker that was on the car window when new (also online at fueleconomy.gov by entering year/make/model). (2) Calculate manually: fill tank completely, note odometer, drive until low, refill and note gallons added and new odometer reading. MPG = miles driven ÷ gallons added. (3) Use your car's trip computer if equipped (usually accurate within 5%). Note: EPA "combined" MPG is average of city/highway. Highway-only trips get 20-30% better MPG; city-only gets 20-30% worse. For mixed driving, use "combined" rating. Real-world MPG is often 10-15% lower than EPA estimates.
Why does my actual MPG differ from EPA ratings?
EPA tests are conducted in laboratory conditions that don't match real-world driving. Factors reducing real MPG: (1) Speed - every 5 mph over 55 mph reduces MPG by ~7%. Going 75 mph vs 55 mph can reduce fuel economy by 25%. (2) Aggressive driving - rapid acceleration and hard braking reduces MPG by 15-30%. (3) A/C use - reduces MPG by 10-25% depending on temperature. (4) Cargo and weight - every 100 lbs reduces MPG by 1-2%. Roof racks reduce MPG by 5-25%. (5) Underinflated tires - reduces MPG by 3-5%. (6) Cold weather - reduces MPG by 10-20%. (7) Short trips - engine doesn't reach optimal temperature. For accurate estimates, use "combined" EPA rating minus 10-15%.
How can I improve my fuel economy?
Ten tips to maximize MPG: (1) Drive smoothly - accelerate gently, anticipate stops. Saves 10-20% fuel. (2) Maintain steady highway speeds - use cruise control. (3) Slow down - every 5 mph above 55 costs you 7% efficiency. (4) Reduce weight - remove unnecessary cargo. (5) Minimize A/C use - use ventilation when possible. (6) Keep tires properly inflated - check monthly. (7) Combine errands - warm engine is 30% more efficient. (8) Coast to stops - take foot off gas early. (9) Maintain vehicle - clean air filters, fresh oil, new spark plugs. (10) Close windows at highway speeds - open windows create drag. These strategies combined can improve MPG by 25-35%, saving hundreds annually on fuel.
Is it cheaper to drive or fly for vacation?
Calculate both ways: Driving: (miles ÷ MPG × fuel price) + hotels + food + wear-and-tear (IRS rate is 65.5¢/mile for total cost). Flying: (airfare × passengers) + airport parking/rideshare + rental car at destination. Break-even typically 300-500 miles for solo travelers, 600-800 miles for couples, 1,000+ miles for families of 4+. Example: Family of 4, 800-mile trip. Driving: 800 miles × $0.655 = $524 + 1 hotel ($120) = $644. Flying: $200/ticket × 4 = $800 + rental car ($50/day × 7) = $1,150. Driving saves $506. But consider: flying takes 2 hours vs 12 hours driving. Your time worth $500? Also factor in: kids tolerate long drives?, scenic route value?, need car at destination?
Should I rent a car or drive mine for a long trip?
Rent if: (1) Your car is unreliable or high-mileage. (2) Your car gets poor MPG and rental is efficient. (3) You don't want wear-and-tear on your vehicle. (4) Rental is newer with better features/safety. Drive yours if: (1) It's reliable and fuel-efficient. (2) Rental + insurance costs exceed fuel savings. Example: 2,000-mile trip. Your SUV: 18 MPG, rental sedan: 35 MPG. Gas $3.50/gallon. Your cost: 2,000 ÷ 18 × $3.50 = $388.89. Rental fuel: 2,000 ÷ 35 × $3.50 = $200. Fuel savings: $188.89. But rental costs $50/day × 10 = $500 + insurance $15/day × 10 = $650 total. Net: $461.11 MORE to rent. Only rent if you value having new/reliable vehicle or want to preserve your car's mileage for resale.
How much do fuel prices vary by location?
Fuel prices vary 20-50% across U.S.: Typically highest: California ($4.50-5.50/gallon due to special formulation, high taxes), Hawaii ($4.50-5.00), Nevada, Washington, Oregon. Typically lowest: Texas ($2.80-3.20), Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana. Regional factors: (1) State taxes - range from 15¢/gallon to 58¢/gallon. (2) Proximity to refineries - Gulf Coast cheaper. (3) Regulations - California requires cleaner fuel (more expensive). (4) Competition - rural areas with few stations charge more. (5) Brand vs. independent - branded stations 5-10% higher. Tips: Use GasBuddy app to find cheap fuel, fill up in low-tax states on road trips, avoid highway exits/tourist areas (20-30% markup), buy gas on weekdays (cheaper than weekends).
What about tolls and other road trip costs?
Fuel is just one road trip cost. Complete budget includes: (1) Fuel - use this calculator. (2) Tolls - can be $5-50 for major routes (NY to Boston: ~$40, cross-state turnpikes: $10-25). Check tollsmart.com for route tolls. (3) Parking - city destinations: $20-40/day. (4) Meals - budget $10-15/meal/person × 3 meals × days × people. (5) Hotels - $80-150/night for budget options. (6) Snacks/drinks - $20-30/day for family. (7) Entertainment/attractions en route. (8) Vehicle emergency fund - flat tire, breakdown, etc. Rule of thumb: fuel is about 20-30% of total road trip cost. If calculator shows $200 fuel, budget $700-1,000 total for trip.
How do electric vehicles compare in operating costs?
EVs typically cost 40-70% less per mile than gas vehicles. Math: Gas car (28 MPG, $3.50/gallon): $3.50 ÷ 28 = $0.125/mile. EV (3.5 mi/kWh, $0.13/kWh electricity): $0.13 ÷ 3.5 = $0.037/mile. EV saves $0.088/mile. At 12,000 mi/year: saves $1,056 annually. Over 10 years: $10,560 fuel savings. Plus EV maintenance savings: no oil changes ($50 × 20 = $1,000), less brake wear ($500), fewer repairs ($2,000) = $3,500 more savings. Total 10-year savings: $14,060. However: EVs cost $8,000-12,000 more upfront. Federal tax credit ($7,500) closes gap. Break-even typically 5-7 years. Best savings for high-mileage drivers (commuters, delivery). Electricity rates vary: $0.08-0.30/kWh affects savings significantly.
